Danai from Greece has a new home in the Netherlands; can you help Rita find a new home too?

Do you remember Danai? She was in the care of the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens Central Park since being left there as a puppy with her six litter mates. Danai had a serious eye condition — a dermoid cyst — that needed operating on. But at around €700, the cost was beyond the budget of the shelter. So Kiki, Martha and their colleagues set about raising funds. Many people were moved by Danai's story. Alexandros, a friend of the shelter, ran the Athens marathon to help raise money. Others — including followers of this blog — made donations. Everyone's generosity meant enough [...]

Meet Peabody, Fidel, Lady, Milou, Poppi, Philomena, Daisy, Robbie, Narla, Silva and Louis from Greece

Animalcouriers travelled from Italy to Greece and arrived to the unusual sight of snow in Patras. We drove on to Athens, where the first passenger to get on board was Champion Mini Bull Terrier Peabody. He's off to England in time for Crufts, and we wish him lots of luck. John and Clare breed and show these lovely dogs. Next up were Fidel and Lady, a lively pair of Spaniels who belong to Dimitri. He's gone on ahead to England, leaving his dogs in the care of his parents, who brought them to us at the Palace Hotel. Stavros brought [...]

Update on Greek dog Danae since her eye surgery

Good news from the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens — the first stage of Danae's eye surgery went very well and she's proving to be an excellent house guest at her foster home. And Cherry, the puppy who had surgery for a broken leg, is also making great strides. Volunteer Alexandros ran the classic marathon in Athens to raise money for Danae's operation. Martha from the shelter tells us: "Alexandros' effort was inspiring, Danae's problem was touching, so by the time Alexandros was finishing the marathon, the amount needed for Danae's surgery was gathered. Just after the marathon we informed those [...]

Crossing the Channel from Calais to England

Animalcouriers reached the Calais area last night, ready for a morning crossing with P&O today. We've had walks and breakfast and have cleared all the paperwork checks, and we're just getting on the ferry. We've really enjoyed spending time with our travel companions. Some were a bit shy at times, but we've been able to talk to, handle and engage with every one of them. When the audience is so attentive, it does make telling travellers' tales that much easier! Carly always looking for the next stroke or tickle. She's so friendly, we're sure Philip will be delighted with [...]

A snowy start in Switzerland this morning

Animalcouriers were hoping to reach Zurich last night, but an accident had closed the Gotthard Tunnel. So we stayed near the southern entrance of the tunnel at a motel we've used before, where there are lovely walks for the dogs and secure parking. To get a head start we woke early this morning — to be greeted by a snow storm, with thick flakes of fluffy white falling all around us! After a quick leg stretch for the dogs and a bite of breakfast for all our passengers, we were ready for the off, keen to avoid getting snowed in [...]

Animalcouriers docks at the port of Ancona in Italy

The fast boat we were originally booked on to cross from Greece to Italy got held up at Barcelona in Spain, owing to bad weather. So we were pleased to be able to switch to another boat, but it was much slower, taking 22 hours to reach Ancona! Checking in with all the pets was a painless process, with all our paperwork approved, which was very reassuring. And on board, the weather was pleasant, warm and sunny. As we promenaded up and down the decks with our canine passengers, onlookers must have thought we were a very eccentric pair of [...]

Danae and Cherry get their operations; and Fred’s sisters are looking for homes

A big thank you to our friends and followers who made donations to the Filozoikos Shelter for Danae's eye surgery to remove a dermoid cyst. By last weekend the shelter had received around €300 of the €700 needed, at which point a Facebook follower of the shelter offered to donate the rest! The email confirming his donation arrived while Alexandros was running the Athens marathon in aid of the shelter. So on Monday Danae went to the vet and her operation was done on Wednesday. When she was collected on Thursday, Kiki and her colleagues quickly realised that with around [...]

Meet our passengers from Greece, who are heading to the UK

Animalcouriers reached Glyfada in Greece, and our first job was to reunite Florrie, Rosie and Izi with Elias and Sheila, and Neo with Henry. Unfortunately it was a dark and rainy night — no good for photos — but we can assure you the reunions were very happy ones. We've now collected our UK-bound passengers and are on board the ferry from Igoumenitsa to Italy. The van is parked very near our cabin, so we can keep popping  across to check on the pets and walk the dogs. We can even have one dog in our cabin from time to [...]

Can you help the Filozoikos Shelter pay for Danae’s eye operation?

Danae was one of a litter of seven puppies left at the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens Central Park, Greece. Now she and her siblings are 12 months old and all need good homes. Danae needs something else, too — an operation on her eye that will cost around €700. She has a dermoid cyst in her eye that looks like an extra set of eyelashes. The cost of this tricky ophthalmic surgery is beyond the budget of the shelter where around 145 dogs and 45 cats are cared for by volunteers. If you can help with a donation towards Danae's operation, the [...]

Meet our latest passengers: First Loki the cat, and Spinone puppies Fanny and Robin

Animalcouriers met up with Giuliano in Rome to collect his daughter's cat, First Loki. Lara is living and working in London, and now First Loki is off to join her. We really enjoyed meeting Giuliano, who was interesting and good fun to talk to. He insisted on handing First Loki to us personally, and had a quick chat with all the other pets on board before kissing First Loki goodbye. Then it was on to Pucci to collect gorgeous four-month-old Spinone puppies Fanny and Robin. Originally bred as gun dogs, Spinones are loyal, friendly and alert dogs with a gentle [...]
