On reaching Greece Animalcouriers headed to the town of Larissa, about three hours north of Athens, to collect Jack Russell Daisy. Her owner, John, has relocated to England and Daisy is off to join him.
Then it was off to Athens where we popped in to visit the Filozoikos Shelter in Athens central park, to catch up with Kiki, Martha and all the rest of the team who look after the dogs. As usual, they were working flat out, with 140 dogs to care for. Kiki, who is always optimistic, said: “But we have found 150 new homes so far this year.” And indeed, another dog was rehomed while we were visiting.
We then made our way to Piraeus port and caught the overnight ferry to Crete. We went to Paul and Anne to deliver their family of four cats and two Chihuahuas. Anne is a self-confessed ‘mad cat lady’ — they’ve been on Crete for less than a month and she’s already looked after a litter of stray kittens, had them neutered, and relocated them to a safe place to live!
Love these stories! So good to hear of the work Filozoikos Shelter is doing.
All at Filozoikos should be very proud of what they do – and they are! It sometimes feels like a losing battle for them though.
Very interesting stories and the shelter looks like a pleasant place to be if a pet doesn’t have a home.
They are the truly lucky ones as they patiently wait…
I wish all 140 pups will find a home soon. It’s impressing to see the giant paws of Jax :o)
Us too Easy. Aren’t they huge 😀
Finally, at long last, I got an email about your blog post!! Eureka!!
I am totally in awe of the shelter in Greece – I’ve never seen anything like it – can you tell me if other European shelters are this deluxe?? I was so thrilled to see it – and of course, I love the reunion pictures!!
Jax…Daisy…they would blend in well with The Red Man and his remaining siblings!!
Thanks so much for the post…:)
Goodness gracious! WordPress woke up! You’ll no doubt be feeling inundated soon 😀
So wonderful for all of the rescuing and rehoming to forever homes these folks do.
Wish I was closer and had room. At least i would go and work with them and help out.
Wonderful place.
They do a marvellous job and rely completely on volunteers.
Aww so much cute on this trip! Well, there’s so much cute on EVERY trip though isn’t there?
Hugs, Carrie & Pups x
Hard not to find cute in them all!
My big sister is in Greece at the moment, If you see her, give her a wave.
Oops, missed her but hope she had a lovely time.
She did.
Filozoikos Shelter is doing some geat work. I think the pic of the two puppies in a cage are so cute. They need to get adopted soon. I also like reading about the self professed “cat lady.” She is doing some very nice work with the stray or street cats.
Aren’t they. Yes, we always hope the puppies get adopted quickly but they’re always more attractive. It’s the older street dogs that have never had a home that are harder to find forever homes for.
Wow what a lot of doggies rehomed..bravo…bravo….and good luck to the rest 🙂 hugs Bev xx
Bravo to everyone involved indeed!
Yep 🙂
Looks like they are doing a good job there! 🙂
They are a really great group of people!
The shelter looks so nice and clean and the animals well cared for. Amazing that the have homed so many! Great group again this trip!
They do an incredible job with their animals on a very tight budget indeed. We’re always so impressed with the sheer numbers they cope with.
Want. White. Puppy. <3
