This is the view from a lay-by along the Valdepeñas — a twisting route through the mountains on the east-west route to Seville. I am cutting across Spain to southern Portugal which is my starting point for my homeward leg.

Unfortunately this spot is the haunt of romantic graffiti artists and litter louts, but the view is spectacular. The folded strata give it an ancient feel despite the trucks and the railway line.

And as I took this photo, a pair of vultures circled around and landed among the rocks.
